30/4/12 St Columb's Park Football Tournament 2012

6th Nov 2012

On Thursday the 22nd of March 2012, pupils from Primary School took part in the Northern Ireland Primary Schools Small Sided Football Tournament at St Columb’s Park, Londonderry. Thankfully it was a beautiful day and the children involved had a great experience.

The boy’s team were placed into a group with four other teams. They were: Drumrane, Bready Jubilee, Fountain Primary School and Gaelscoil Eadin Mhoir. The boys performed very well in the group stage with a 2-1 win over Drumrane (Goals for Brooklyn and Levi), a 3-1 win over Bready (Two goals for Brooklyn and a goal for Levi) and a 2-2 draw with Gaelscoil Eadin Mhoir (Both goals from Levi). Unfortunately, the team suffered a 3-2 defeat to Fountain (Goals scored by Levi and William F) in a very closely fought contest. By the end of the group fixtures Donemana P.S. had scored enough points to progress to the Semi-Finals.

In the Semi Final match they faced St Columba’s P.S., Newbuildings. Once again the boys tried very hard and got off to a great start with a goal from Steven McDonald. The rest of the match just didn’t go as planned for the team and they ended up losing 3-1. St Columba’s progressed to the final and ended up eventually winning the regional tournament. It was a great competition and the boys thoroughly enjoyed it. Well done!

The girl’s team also had a terrific day at the tournament. They were placed in a group with: St Eugene’s, Drumachose, St Therese’s and Fountain Primary School. The girls began the tournament with quite a promising goalless draw against St Eugene’s however they suffered a heavy 3-0 defeat to St Therese’s in their next game. The girls managed to pick themselves up for game three and once again managed a goalless draw with Drumachose this time. Game four signalled the end of the tournament for the girls as they got beat 3-1 by Fountain Primary and as a result they didn’t score enough points to progress through to the next round. A big well done to Tori Williamson as she was the only girl to grab a goal. Well done to all the girls involved.
