P5- Firefighter Visit (Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue)

P5- Firefighter Visit (Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue)

P5 had a very special visitor from the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service (NIFRS) this week.

Firefighter Mullen came to discuss fire safety with the class and things that they can do at home to keep themselves safe. He warned us of dangers to look out for in our homes and what we are supposed to do if we are involved in a suspected fire. The children listened very attentively and enjoyed all the information that Firefighter Mullen shared.

In preparation for his visit the class had been working on question writing in their Literacy lessons. In their lessons prior to the visit they had discussed open and closed questions as well as words to use when beginning a question. They then tried to write a list of questions that they could ask our special visitor.

Firefighter Mullen very kindly agreed to have a question session at the end of his talk and every P5 child got the opportunity to ask him one of their wonderful questions they had created. As a consequence of the questions asked by the class, we got to hear some amazing stories, what the job involves on a daily basis and how to become a firefighter.

I was extremely proud of the class and also very grateful to Firefighter Mullen for allowing us the opportunity to strengthen our Literacy skills.

This wonderful morning finished with the children even getting the chance to try on a real fire helmet.

Well done boys and girls and thanks again to Firefighter Mullen and the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service (NIFRS).
