Which direction are you going?

17th May 2019

If you need directions then P3 are the ones to ask!  They have been learning about left and right turns, making forward and backward moves and arriving at destinations using as few directions as possible.

We took full advantage of the beautiful weather and started our learning outside by drawing grids on the playground.  Each child took it in turns to be the robot needing directional commands in order to reach a specific square on the grid.

We then took our learning indoors to practise our new language commands on the Bee Bot mats.  The children then enjoyed a little free time to programme their Bee Bot journeys and it was wonderful to see their understanding grow through simple trial and error.

With this new knowledge strengthened each group were then given a team task which involved programming their Bee Bot to reach a certain destination (via another point on the map just to stretch those brain cells a little further!)  Instructions were recorded on whiteboards after group discussion.  At the end we gathered around to test out each group's commands and see what went right and what could be changed.

As a final task each individual child had their own personal journey challenge for Bee Bot.  This involved filling out the instruction sheet and having their commands tested out first by themselves then another child and finally by an adult in the classroom.

I'm delighted to say that the children worked really well and have a good grasp of both directional language and of how to input commands.  We had fun too which is always an extra bonus.  Well done P3!
