Sink or Float?

10th May 2019
Sink or Float?

Yesterday, P5/6 put their science hats on for some prediction and experimentation work. Our topic of 'Unsinkable' focuses primarily on the Titanic and one of our biggest questions throughout the topic has been,

"How did a ship weighing over 52,000 tonnes manage to float?"

We began our lesson by having a 'Thought Shower' about the various different materials that have been used in boat/ship making over the last 150 years and then transferred some of the items into our planning/recording sheet as well as a few extra items from the classroom.

With the items being used, we first made a prediction if it would float or sink, we then drew a diagram and wrote out instructions. Next, was the fun part!! The testing of the items and lots of water over the classroom. :)

After testing each item we recorded our results and tried to answer the question as to why some items floated and some sank. We discussed the words, density and buoyancy and finished our lesson where we started, by discussing how the amazing Titanic stayed afloat.

Well done P5/6 you worked brilliantly!
