Sink or Float?

5th Sep 2019

Today P2/3 had an impromptu science lesson after Maisie and Eve showed us the lovely boats they made during lunch time.  We wondered if their boats really would float so decided to test it out!  The class examined the boats carefully then voted with their feet by going to stand beside the 'float' sign or the 'sink' sign.  Now the moment of truth - Maisie carefully lowered her boat into the water and it did indeed float!  Eve's smaller boat was next and success, as it too floated, much to the joy of the class.  We were curious as to why they floated and Darci decided it was because the leaves didn't let the water through.  We learned the new word 'waterproof' and thought about other materials that were also waterproof.  James thought the boats could carry more little flowers so we tested the strength by adding Lego pieces one by one. We discovered that the bigger boat could hold EIGHT pieces of Lego before it began to sink.  I have a feeling there will be lots more leaf boats made tomorrow!
